Your Fishing Licence

Before you can begin fishing on the waters, you must take up the government’s recreational fishing license. State governments usually issue recreational fishing licenses. The state governments also determine the fees for each type of license. These days, you can take up your license online.

The licenses typically have 2-3 years’ validity. The licenses do come with restrictions on the number of fish you can take from the water bodies. Then, there are also rules about the minimum sizes these creatures must attain before you can fish them.

Most states ban people on recreational fishing from selling the fish that they catch. There are also rules as to the type and specifications for your fishing gear.

Speaking of the fishing gear, having the right combination of fishing gear will make your fishing easier and much fun.

Basic Fishing Gear

Fishing for recreational purposes becomes much fun if you set out with the right mix of tools. Here, we enumerate the basic fishing gear you need, especially for a beginner in recreational fishing.

1) The fishing rod and reel

The fishing rod is a slender pole made of flexible but durable material, enabling you to cast the fishing line deeper and further into the water.

There are different types of fishing rods out there, and they are typically classified along the lines.

  • Strength
  • Bending capabilities
  • Responsiveness

There is nothing like the best fishing rod, but you can have the right fishing rod for you. The right fishing rod for you will depend on the type and level of Fisher that you are.

If you are a beginner angler, you should use a medium strength fishing rod to practice properly with different types of fish

On the other hand, the fishing reel is attached to the rod to help you wind your line and draw up your catch.

2) Fishing Lines

The fishing line plays a lot of roles in the fishing process. For instance, it helps lure the fish, hooking it and landing and harvesting the fish.

There are different types of fishing lines that you can go for. However, the one you go for will be dependent on several factors; for instance, the environmental condition at the time of fish.

Rough weather conditions will require you going for a stronger fishing line. However, in calmer conditions, clear and thin lines are recommended.

3) Bait

The bait is the material you attach at the very end of the line to lure the fish. There are different types of baits that you can use; there are live baits and artificial baits.

Live baits in the form of actual animals are always advised. However, in this case, you have to select the live bait depending on the type of fish you are looking out for. This is because fish go for different types of baits. Nevertheless, the most common are minnows and earth-worms. If you can get either, you can go for options such as corn, marshmallows, squished bread, amongst others.

Other materials you may need include swivels, sinkers and bobbers.
